The General Intensive English Program aims to develop students’ social practical communication skills in terms of four English skills: listening, speaking and pronunciation, reading and writing including grammar. Full-time courses are offered at all levels from beginner to advanced, and the length of the courses ranges 1 to 52 weeks. Students take a placement test on arrival and are placed in a class based on the test results. They will also receive a student orientation introducing the rules, Assessments are held to monitor the progress of students and determine further study pathways.
Students will be able to receive a College Certificate of proficiency at the completion of their course and a Statement of attendance.
The General Intensive English is a 25 hour/week course designed to give students the opportunity for rapid progress in all facets of the English language. Classes are structured from beginner through advanced and are organized according to progression through accompanying textbooks.
Morning and evening classes are available. We teach students grammar, writing, pronunciation, and other basic skills. These lessons correspond with conversation class, where students can use the skills they have learned in a more practical, casual setting. Conversation classes will vary in theme, so students can use a broad range of useful vocabulary.

English for Academic Purposes

Course Information

English for Academic Purposes is a 12 week course designed for students who are planning to go on to university or a vocational course with high academic content. Classes are similar to university lectures and seminars and are intended to help you overcome the typical problem areas for overseas students.

Course Aims

To prepare students for university across the 4 major skills:

Speaking: you will learn how to express an opinion in seminars, make presentations, work on projects individually and in a team.
Listening: you will practice the listening and note taking skills needed for lectures and seminar. You will also learn to summarise and organise information in a useful way.
Reading: You will learn skills such as scanning, skimming as well as the research skills necessary to access specific information.
Writing: you will learn how to present your ideas in an academic format acceptable to a university. This will include essay and report formats, bibliographies and methods of citing references.

Assessment

Your assessment will be to produce a project that simulates a university assignment.
You will be expected to negotiate a topic with your lecturer, research the topic and provide a rough draft before writing up your assignment.
You will also be expected to give a presentation summarising your work for the class.

Your final certificate will give you marks for your assignment, your presentation, your class performance and attitude.

Pathways to Further Study

Students who complete the EAP Program to a satisfactory standard may enrol into most TAFE New South Wales courses without taking a further English language test

The EAP Program satisfies the English Language entry requirements for the University of New South Wales Foundation Year. Students who satisfactorily complete our EAP Program and meet the Foundation Year academic entry requirements may enrol into the UNSW Foundation Year with no further English language testing.

Students who complete the Foundation Year to the required level will have entry into the first year of an undergraduate degree course at the University of NSW.

IELTS Preparation

IELTS is the main examination used to measure a student's level of English in Australia. Two versions of the test exist:

Academic: You should take the academic version if you wish to go to university in Australia

General Training: You should take this version of the test if you want to study a vocational course or as proof of your English level for migration purposes

Course Information

Our 12 week IELTS preparation course not only gives you practice in taking the test, but helps you with strategies to improve your test score. You will practise skills such as:

Predicting questions in listening
Skimming and scanning to improve reading speed
Essay formats
Confidence-building speaking exercises

The IELTS Test

IELTS is an external examination. The nearest testing centre is at UTS on Broadway (a 10 minute walk from our campus). We will help you enrol in the test when you are ready. You will be given a mark out of 9 for listening, reading, writing and speaking. These marks are averaged out to give an overall band score, which can be used as proof of your English level.
